A student performing above the grade curriculum (in one area or more) must be encouraged and effectively challenged; hence, tutors design their lessons to academically stimulate and enlighten gifted students to achieve at their potential. Since it is also essential that a child work at his or her academic grade level, an assessment is conducted to determine the level at which the student should begin. Due to the engaging nature of the Direct Instruction programs, they are used to ‘accelerate' or advance a child at a quick, efficient pace. Gifted students potentially differ from their classmates in terms of the pace that they learn, the depth of their understanding, and the interests that they possess (Maker, 1982). Developing instructional programs to meet the unique needs of all students is vital to our team of educators at Oakville Preparatory Services.
